More Americans buy sporting goods than actually go to sporting events. And they're more likely to take care of their pet than go see the latest movie. The Associated Press recently released an infographic showing how we spend our cash after living expenses come out of the paycheck. (Pricey Free Time, Associated Press, 11/27/11) The results might surprise you: ? 16% of Americans buy sporting and recreational goods, spending $147.3 billion dollars in 2010 ? 12% buy audio and video equipment at a cost of $113.3 billion. ? 10.8% gamble, spending $99.6 billion dollars. ? 10.3% spend $95 billion on periodicals, books and stationery ? 8.2% of Americans use their extra money to take care of their pets, spending $75.7 billion. On the "low end of the scale," Americans "only" spent ? $34.6 billion on sports clubs memberships ? $21 billion on spectator sports ? $17.3 billion on concerts and non-sports events ? $11.9 billion on seeing movies in the theater So what can you do with these numbers? As you plan your 2012 promotions, keep in mind what's of value to your listeners. Remember, these are only entertainment expenses, not living expenses. But sometimes it's good to step out of the ordinary and offer your listeners something fun and just out of reach. |
